Horizons in Livestock Sciences — the Impact of the New Biology

In the next 5–10 years, anticipated advances in livestock science promise to be exciting and frenetic. The Horizons In Livestock Sciences conference, with the theme of The New Biology, has given researchers a preview of this future with its enormous potential and responsibility. Selected papers from this conference are published in this special edition of The Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture, and represent a broad cross-section of the technological advances that are now on our doorstep.

Recent advances in animal cloning and transgenics best exemplify the plasticity of the livestock production species and their unrealised genetic and biological potential. In this regard the relationship between man and production animal is rapidly changing, and the influence of public opinion on the ethics of this relationship is paramount. The Horizons in Livestock Sciences Conference papers have highlighted many of these scientific advances, and placed these in the context of responsible and sustainable production systems.
